SIM cards and internet in Tunisia
Staying connected in Tunisia is easy. Three operators sell prepaid SIM cards, and mobile data is the simplest way to get online while you travel or work remotely.
The three operators
Ooredoo, Orange and Tunisie Telecom all sell prepaid SIMs with data packs. Coverage is best in cities and along the coast, so compare current offers in a shop, as prices and packs change.
Where to buy and what you need
You can buy a SIM at the airport or at an operator's shop in town. Bring your passport, as SIM cards must be registered. Ask the staff to activate the data pack and test it before you leave the shop.
Wifi, speed and coverage
Hotels, cafes and coworking spaces usually have wifi, but speed varies, so test it before a video call. Mobile signal can be weak in remote desert and mountain areas, so download maps and key documents beforehand.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my home SIM in Tunisia?
Usually yes with roaming, but it can be expensive. A local prepaid SIM is generally cheaper for data.
Is Tunisian internet fast enough for video calls?
In cities, mobile 4G and good broadband are usually fine for calls. Quality varies by building and area, so test your connection before you rely on it for work.
